Immigration and Race in Illinois

About the Workshop

Immigration has been a major force in Illinois’ history and it has every prospect of continuing to shape the state’s near-term and long-term future. Race is a major dimension of the impact of immigration on Illinois society. Because it offers many ways in which to pursue its goal and values, CDMS sponsored the initiative on Race and Immigration in Illinois. Specific aspects examined as part of this initiative include (1) Race and urban immigration which has a specific focus on economic impact of immigration on different racial groups in Chicago and (2) Rural immigration that examines immigrant needs and prospects for social integration. There are many scholars and researchers at the University of Illinois and around the state. This workshop brings together scholars and practitioners from around the state to explore and discuss immigration related issues.Workshop sessions are designed to emphasize:

  • Issues related to the intersection of race/ethnicity, class, and gender disparities;
  • Issues related to policy, legislative, legal, and societal-level (state-wide) developments;
  • Issues of teaching, learning, and curriculum transformation;
  • Research, assessment, and evaluation issues and best practices models; and
  • Building and fostering university-community partnerships.
